Oh man. I really blew it, this time. I should start by letting you know that I teach five of the same class in a row. It's physical science after physical science after physical science after physical science after physical science. By the fifth class, I'm lucky if I remember if I even gave an introduction or took attendance. The monotony can be overwhelming sometimes, but it definitely gives me a chance to think about what is working and what is not - by the time fifth hour rolls around, the lecture has been perfected (except for my incessant "have I already talked about ____?" "Have I told you about ____ yet?"). Well, things didn't go so smoothly today. Yesterday, I had some time management issues in fourth hour. We didn't cover how to write molecular formulas. Well, today I was supposed to cover that lil bit so that the students could prepare for their test, which is conveniently on Monday. For some reason I was convinced that I ran short in fifth hour instead. So fifth hour comes along and I tell them that we need to cover molecular formulas since we didn't get to it. They immediately recognize what I'm writing on the board and say, "We covered that yesterday!!!" In my mind, time stood still for a brief moment as I put two and two together and realized that fourth hour will have to take the test without this vital knowledge. I hope they figure it out on their own! Unfortunately, I know this won't be the case for every students. Argh. How to prevent this from happening again?

Hi Lisa
I have this problem often (more often after baby I have noticed)! What I recently started to do was to create a wiki for all of my different classes that I teach (I teach 4 different groups of undergraduate students, where I only see them a few times a semester and often forget what we have covered). I have one wiki for each class, and a wiki page for each day that we cover material. I include all the handouts, links, PowerPoints..etc. on the wiki so it is one place. The students are also welcome to post and extend the learning on the wiki.
Hi Lisa,
I don't know how you do that! I get confused and I only teach two of the same classes... :) Anyway, I am not as technologically advanced as Liz, so I use sticky notes and lots of them. My third hour is often behind, so I have a little note reminding my what I need to say to them... The other thing that I recently started doing is a PowerPoint slide each day, which I project on the TV at the beginning of each lesson. On it, it states all the things that we need to cover... I have a different one for my classes, so that also helps to remind me what I am doing.
Anyway, if you want to talk more about Oregon, let me know!

I can imagine that would be SO hard! I have no suggestions better than those already offered. I just try to write down where I ended with each class before I leave the room. My sixth hour is smaller and so we always get ahead of the other class that is completely full. Enjoy the nice weather!
